I'm Cassie, mum of three and we are currently in our fourth year of home education.
We are still early into our journey, by many home educators’ standards. So, while "how we started" is still fresh in my mind, I want to help others begin their own home ed journey or help those much further in their journey who have just hit a wall. Basically, I'm putting this out there for anyone it may help.
People ask me a lot at our home ed groups about how I home ed my children and the curriculums we use. We follow a structured, but flexible approach which I'm finding many find intriguing in the age of unschooling.
Some even say that it’s just copying school at home. Well, each to their opinion, but no, it's not school, it's our school. Our pace, our rules, no bullying, chats encouraged... our school. Soaring Eagles, as my children named us at the beginning.
I have a varied bunch of kids... one is a high achiever who has been to school from nursery to year 4, she adores school, but was held back within the restraints of the year groups. So, once we learnt we could home ed (during lockdown), it was the answer to all we had wished the school could do, which was allow her to go at her pace. She is now 12 years old and ready for her GCSEs should she want to do them early. Which yes, she can with home ed. That's the beauty, go at their own pace.
My middle child is a different story. He also used to go to school from nursery to year 2, but had a horrific experience, was physically bullied and traumatised daily with having to go to school. He also hadn't advanced beyond a basic reception level learning ability. Roll around lockdown and he flourished with home ed.
Everything changed, he was happier and found his love of reading, maths and science. We have also learnt he has Autism. He still has a block with regards to writing, but can dictate complete understanding of whatever is taught, which he voluntarily enjoys doing. He has just turned 10 years old and has caught up with his peers in every area except writing.
My youngest is different again. Apart from a few weeks of nursery, he attended between the multiple lockdowns of 2020, he's never been to school. He absolutely loves learning, I can barely keep up.
He's moving at a lovely steady pace, his own pace. I would say he's an 'average' learner… meaning not necessarily advanced, certainly not struggling either, but just going along his journey smoothly just where he should be if he were at school. But what's more important to me at his age is his love of learning and how that mindset will set him up so well for life.
So, when people ask me how I educate my children I struggle to answer, as it’s a bit of a personal journey in that every child is so different. Sometimes unschooling suits better, some curriculums suit one child, but not the other and sometimes tutors work best, these are just a few home education styles there are many. Even within my own family, this is the case, each of my children are so very different in how they learn.
So, I could answer what I do for each of mine, but it will always need to be adjusted for your child. My aim of this website is to provide a variety of home education curriculums and accessories all in one place. I'd also like to build a community within my Facebook page for anyone, who like us, would like a flexible kind of structure to their day. A place for advice on how to use different curriculums to suit each of your children better. How to juggle learning times around parent work times.
If your new to home education I also highly recommend you join your local home education Facebook group. Enter home education & your town/city into the Facebook search bar.
Curriculums are there as a guide, you can choose how to use them. You know your child best and which section is too much, not enough etc.
But the peace of mind these curriculums I’m selling on my website have given me is invaluable. Whenever I have doubts, are we doing enough? I can clearly see where we are and where we would like to be. It's easier then to plan for your journey.
Sometimes when I'm struggling with a subject, that I find hard myself (grammar for example!) the curriculums teach for me, I only read and to be honest, I learn right beside my child.
It’s beautiful that where my own schooling had let me down all those years ago, I am being helped by these curriculums too. We are all learning together and it's teaching my children the valuable mindset that learning is for life not just for the school years. You can teach an old dog new tricks! I'm not ashamed to say it, I'm proud, that my children will not have the struggle I have. They are getting a better education than school did for me. An education tailored to them and their individual needs.
With each passing year in our home education journey I am growing in confidence teaching my children and if you are at the beginning of your own journey I can promise from experience you too will grow in confidence. Home ed is amazing.
Love,
Cassie and kids x
